As the world will be tuning in to watch France v Romania kick off 2016’s European Championship, I thought I would offer my predictions for this years tournament. The BBC asked for suggestions for:
- Best Player
- Biggest Flop
- Top Scorer
- Surprise Team
So here are my suggestions
Winner = FRANCE
A tricky one here as there are so many contenders. Germany and Spain haven’t looked comfortable in their warm up games, Germany having lost to Slovakia and Spain to Georgia and I am predicting that England and Italy will flatter to deceive. Other countries look too reliant on individuals, such as Ibrahimovic at Sweden, Ronaldo at Portugal, Bale with Wales.
In the end, it was a decision between (a) Belgium, the highest ranked European team currently, (b) England, patriotism only or (c) France because they have home advantage. We will wait and see if they crack under the pressure of being at home or whether Spurs captain Hugo Lloris will march them to victory.Embed from Getty Images
2. Best Player = PAUL POGBA
Paul Pogba has looked so impressive this season with Juventus and his ability will be a key factor in whether France progress to the final or not. A hugely sought after player, with huge sums of money apparently being offered for him, he will be looking to impress at the tournament.
Other contendors were Cristiano Ronaldo (of course), Zlatan, Dele Alli (got to have a Spurs player in there somewhere), Manuel Neuer and Griezmann.
3. Biggest Flop = ITALY
I am unsure about this, England may be a flop as may Spain but in the end I decided with Italy.
Player-wise, I think Wayne Rooney will fail to live up to expectations again at an international tournament and that Vardy and Kane should both start ahead of him if he is going to be selected as a forward option.
4. Top Scorer = THOMAS MULLER
I don’t really want to go with a German but I might have to. 32 goals in 49 appearances last season, he is in superb form and with 32 goals for his country in his career already, he might power himself to top goalscorer.
- Harry Kane 25 goals Premier League
- Antoine Griezmann 22 goals La Liga
- Zlatan Ibrahimovic 38 goals Ligue 1
- Cristiano Ronaldo 35 goals La Liga
- Robert Lewandowski 30 goals Bundesliga
5. Surprise Team = AUSTRIA
Extremely impressive as they topped their group in qualifying, unbeaten in 10 games. With 22 goals they were one of the countries with the most goals and only conceded 5 in the 10 games they played. I tip them to surprise this year.
